Lexar Media has announced that it is going to incorporate encryption technology into its Professional CompactFlash cards. The new technology, when used with enabled digital cameras, protects digital files from unwanted access.

Lexar's encryption scheme uses an easy-to-use software tool that establishes security settings on the memory card and the corresponding digital camera. Digital content on the memory card can only be accessed from the digital camera with the corresponding encryption key, or from a personal computer that has a valid username and password.

The new security software, which will not degrade camera performance, is based on a 160-bit encryption technology. Nikon's recently released 12.4 megapixel D2X digital SLR camera is the first camera to incorporate the new security technology.
